Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation is a breast-enhancing procedure that can elevate the shape, symmetry, fullness, and size of your breasts. (1)

Over time, there are several factors that can affect the appearance and composition of your breasts. Events such as pregnancy, breast feeding, genetics, weight fluctuations, hormonal changes, and the natural effects of aging can leave you with misshapen or deflated-looking breasts. Before and After Photos

About Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that can create a more sculpted and desirable chest. Breast augmentations are highly popular and have consecutively remained as one of the nation’s most widely performed aesthetic surgeries since 2006. (2, 3) Dr. Homas can perform a breast augmentation using either silicone gel-filled or saline-filled breast implants. No matter where your concerns derive from, both approaches offer unique benefits and stunning results that you can enjoy for years to come.

About Breast Implant Augmentation

Breast implant augmentation uses breast implants to help you achieve larger, more voluptuous breasts. Restoring fullness in the upper part of the breast is a challenge that can be effectively achieved with breast implant surgery. Dr. Homas offers several different types of breast implants, including both silicone and saline implants. While he finds that silicone implants provide the most natural-looking and feeling results, he may also use saline depending on your personal anatomy and goals.

  • Silicone Implants: Silicone implants contain a viscoelastic silicone gel. These implants mimic the natural softness and movements of organic breast tissue and are less prone to rippling.
  • Saline Implants: Saline breast implants are filled with sterile saline. Dr. Homas can place these implants either pre-filled or empty in the chest and fill them afterwards–providing you with a greater degree of variability. (1)

Breast Augmentation Candidates

You may be a suitable candidate for breast augmentation if you are interested in enhancing the size, shape, symmetry, and fullness of your breasts using breast implants. You may also benefit from this procedure if you are interested in enlarging smaller or underdeveloped breasts or reconstructing your chest after a mastectomy or sustaining trauma.

You should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding your results. It is also important that you are nonsmoking or willing to quit nicotine. Dr. Homas will determine your candidacy during your consultation.

Personal Consultation

No two patients are the same, which is why we ask that you attend a personal consultation before scheduling your procedure. During your consultation, you will meet with Dr. Homas individually, where he will spend at least an hour exploring your candidacy, motivations, goals, and more. He will use this time to explain what a breast augmentation is and work with you to create your treatment plan.

Once he begins creating your treatment plan, Dr. Homas will have you use breast implant sizers to help you visualize your potential results. We ask that you bring in several different shirt styles to your consultation for this step, such as low-cut tops, t-shirts, or tight-fitting tops, as it will allow you to have a comprehensive overview of how your breasts may look once healed. By the time you leave this consultation, you will have a full understanding of what breast augmentation consists of, as well as a fully personalized solution that addresses each of your concerns.

If you are ready to schedule this consultation and start transforming your chest, please schedule a consultation online. You may also call our San Antonio office directly at (210) 460-3646.

Preparation

After scheduling your breast augmentation, you will need to begin making several preparations. Dr. Homas will provide you with a full set of pre-operative instructions to help. They may include:

  • Medication Management: Under proper medical guidance, discontinue taking any medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning properties. You will also need to stop taking GLP-1 medications for weight loss before surgery.
  • Arranging Transportation: Have a trusted friend or relative drive you home after your procedure, as you will not be able to transport yourself.
  • Taking Time Off: Arrange time away from your daily activities to allow your body time to heal itself.
  • Picking Up Medications: Dr. Homas advises filling any prescriptions you may need as you recover ahead of time to reduce any potential post-operative stress.
  • Ceasing Any Nicotine: You will need to stop any nicotine consumption in the weeks leading up to your procedure, and continue maintaining your abstinence afterwards.
  • Avoiding Alcohol: Refrain from consuming any alcohol in the days before and after your procedure.

Procedure

Upon your arrival, a member of our team will lead you to a private surgical suite where you will meet with Dr. Homas and his team. They will reconfirm your desired enhancements before cleansing your skin and administering general anesthesia. Dr. Homas will then proceed to perform either a breast implant augmentation.

Breast Implant Augmentation

Dr. Homas will place an incision using the inframammary incision.

  • Inframammary Incision: This incision is ~2 inches long and extends horizontally in the skin crease under the breast and conceals scarring within the natural contours beneath the breasts. (5)

After making the incision, Dr. Homas will carefully create a pocket beneath your pectoralis muscle. This placement can reduce the risk of capsular contracture and can yield a more natural upper pole contour. He will then place the implants in the pocket behind your breasts before carefully closing each incision.

Recovery

During your initial recovery period, it is common to develop swelling, bruising, or soreness around the breasts. These effects will subside on their own with time, but you may also manage them using medications Dr. Homas prescribes and plenty of rest. He will also provide you with a supportive bra that you will need to wear, as it can keep the implants in the proper position and preserve your new contours as you heal.

You may return to most of your daily activities after one to two weeks of rest. However, you will need to refrain from participating in any physically taxing activities for another few weeks, or until Dr. Homas directs you.

Dr. Homas will provide you with a full set of post-operative instructions to guide you through each phase of your recovery. By following each one, you can return to your routine more quickly and comfortably.

Results

You will certainly notice initial improvements in your appearance shortly after your procedure, but your full results will become more apparent as any residual swelling decreases and your tissues start settling. Following breast augmentation, you will be able to enjoy rounder, larger, and fuller breasts, improved proportions, and a more desirable figure overall, each of which can contribute to a greater sense of body positivity and self-confidence.

The results of breast implant augmentations will be long-lasting, with results you may enjoy for several years to come. Patients should check their implants biannually. Implants are not lifetime devices, and you may eventually need to replace them.
