About Tummy Tucks
A tummy tuck is a body contouring procedure that repairs weakened abdominal muscles and removes excess or sagging skin from around the midsection. Many patients seek this procedure to correct the effects of rapid weight loss or pregnancy, but it can also effectively enhance waist definition. Tummy tucks remain one of the most popular surgical procedures in the country for several years, with surgeons performing more than 171,000 procedures in 2024 alone. (2)
Benefits
Tummy tucks offer several benefits, including:
- Flatter Stomach: You can achieve a flatter, smoother stomach by removing any loose or hanging skin from around your midsection.
- More Defined Figure: A tummy tuck can restore a more balanced and proportionate appearance between the midsection and the remainder of your body.
- Tightened Muscles: Dr. Homas will repair separation of the six-pack muscles (diastasis recti). He also repairs hernias of the abdominal wall, if present, during the tummy tuck. This can help address any weaknesses or bulges from a hernia. (3)
- Customized Procedures: Dr. Homas designs each procedure around your concerns, anatomy, and desired appearance. This ensures that he delivers both your aesthetic goals and personal needs.
- Concealable Scarring: Dr. Homas discreetly places each incision above the pubic area, allowing you to easily hide any scarring beneath your undergarments and swimwear.
- Enhanced Self-Esteem: Many patients report feeling more confident and empowered after seeing the results of their procedure.
- Long-Lasting Results: The results of a tummy tuck can last for several years, especially with a healthy lifestyle and stable weight.
Candidates
You may be a candidate for a tummy tuck if you possess weakened or separated abdominal muscles, as well as hanging or sagging skin around your waist or midsection. Those interested in repairing the effects of pregnancy and weight loss may also be suitable candidates. Women should have completed planning their families, as pregnancy can adversely affect the long-term effects of the procedure. Anyone who has recently undergone a weight loss journey should also ensure they achieve a stable and maintainable weight. (1)
If you are interested in receiving a tummy tuck, you should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding your results. You should also be nonsmoking or willing to quit using nicotine. Dr. Homas will finalize each patient’s candidacy during their personal consultation.
Personal Consultation
During your consultation, Dr. Homas will meet with you individually to finalize your candidacy and determine whether or not a tummy tuck is right for you. He will ask you several questions to assess your medical history, your concerns, and your desired outcomes. He will also perform a physical examination to evaluate the condition of your abdomen.
Dr. Homas will use this information to determine the most effective treatment for your concerns. He will recommend the most effective techniques, and he may also suggest pairing your tummy tuck with another procedure. Through this combination of careful listening and evaluation, Dr. Homas can create a one-of-a-kind solution for your concerns.

Preparation
After scheduling your procedure, Dr. Homas will provide a set of detailed pre-operative instructions to help you prepare. He may direct you to:
- Discontinue taking any medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning properties.
- Prepare to take time away from work and other commitments.
- Pre-arrange transportation to and from your procedure.
- Cease any nicotine use in the weeks leading up to your procedure, maintaining cessation throughout the entirety of your recovery.
- Fill any prescriptions ahead of time.
By following each of these instructions, you can ensure a successful recovery and smooth procedure.
Procedure
Your tummy tuck will begin with the cleansing and sanitization of your skin before you receive general anesthesia to stay comfortably asleep throughout the procedure.
Dr. Homas will place an incision extending from hip-to-hip across your lower abdomen, just above the pubic area. This placement allows you to conceal any post-procedure scarring beneath your clothing or undergarments with ease and discretion. He will then carefully perform each of your desired corrections. He may tighten any weakened or separated muscles (diastasis recti), correcting the appearance of a bulge or a pooch. He will also excise loose or hanging skin from the lower belly, restoring a flatter, smoother, and defined look to your figure.
Dr. Homas may also perform additional treatments or techniques if there are any other factors contributing to your concerns. These can include liposuction techniques to remove substantial amounts of fat or hernia repairs to address any protrusion from either congenital or acquired hernias.
Once Dr. Homas performs your necessary corrections, he will close each incision with meticulous care to minimize scarring. After this, you will rest in the recovery suite until you are ready to return home.
Recovery
Dr. Homas performs tummy tucks on an outpatient basis, so he will release you home on the same day as your procedure to continue resting.
After a tummy tuck, it is common to experience swelling, bruising, or tenderness around the treated areas. These side effects are temporary and will gradually dissipate on their own, but you may also manage them with plenty of rest. Dr. Homas will direct you to wear a compression garment as you recover, which will minimize any swelling and protect your new curves.
You may return to your career and other light activities after resting for approximately one to three weeks. However, you will need to continue avoiding any strenuous or physically demanding activities until Dr. Homas provides clearance.
Dr. Homas will provide a full set of post-operative instructions to guide you as you heal. These instructions will help you best care for your body, allowing you to achieve a quick and efficient recovery.
Results
You will be able to notice differences in your figure immediately after your procedure, but you may enjoy the full results of your tummy tuck once any swelling subsides. Your stomach will appear flatter and smoother, and your waist will be more defined. You may also experience a more sculpted and proportionate silhouette overall.
Tummy tucks deliver long-lasting and durable results, with many patients experiencing their results for several years. However, you must maintain a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle, as weight fluctuations can alter the results of your procedure.
Complementary Procedures
Breast Volume Enhancement
There are several procedures that Dr. Homas can perform alongside your tummy tuck for more comprehensive results, one of which is a breast augmentation, possibly with a breast lift. Combining a tummy tuck with breast enhancement is commonly done and is known as a “mommy makeover.” This combination of procedures can transform your torso and can help you to achieve a more proportionate and defined silhouette.
